The parish hearse committee

At a public meeting held in the Taliesin Board Schoolroom on Wednesday evening August 18th 1897.

It was resolved that an effort be made to get a hearse for the use of the parish. And collecting books were given out to the following, viz: - to

Messrs James Jones Tymawr & Richard Jenkins Henhafod for Craig-y-penrhyn, Tynwern and mountain district
Thomas Jenkin Thomas Neuadd & John Jones (Jun) Penpompren for the district from Neuadd to Ynyslas
Mr Thomas Thomas late of Neuadd for Taliesin
Mr John Rees Halfway for Trerddol
Mr David Arter Free Trade Hall for friends outside the parish

At a public meeting held in the Taliesin Board School Room on Saturday evening September 18th 1897. It was resolved that the Vicar be appointed Treasurer, and that the following additional collectors be appointed viz -

Mr William Edwards with Mr Thomas Thomas at Taliesin

Mr David Owen Edwards with Mr John Rees at Trerddol

At a public meeting held at the Taliesin Board School Room on Saturday evening November 6th 1897. It was resolved that a committee consisting of two Churchmen, two Calvinistic Methodists, two Wesleyan Methodists, one Congregationalist, and one Baptist with the Vicar of the parish for the time being as ex officio Chairman, be appointed to carry out all arrangements in connection with getting a hearse, hearse house, drawing out rules and regulations as to use, and future management and care

The following persons were unanimously appointed to serve the committee, viz: -

Committee Meetings

At a committee meeting held at the Vicarage on Saturday evening November 27th 1897. Present the Vicar in the Chair, Messrs John Davies Builder Taliesin, William Edwards Taliesin, William Mason Lletylwydin, David Davies Cefngweiriog, James James Tanyrallt and John Jones (Jun) Penpompren. It was resolved:

(1) On the proposition of Mr William Mason seconded by Mr John Jones (Jun) that Mr John Jones Royal Oak be appointed secretary of the committee. (Carried unanimously)

(2) On the proposition of Mr James James Tanyrallt seconded by Mr William Edwards that five members of the committee form a quorum. (Carried unanimously)

(3) On the proposition of Mr James James seconded by Mr William Edwards that Mr John Jones Royal Oak and Mr John Davies Builder be asked to invite tenders for the hearse and harness, the tenders to be for both or for one from the different parties, and that they be authorised to advertise in the "Cambrian News" if necessary. (Carried unanimously)

(4) That the tenders be in by December 28th 1897

(5) On the proposition of Mr John Jones (Jun) Penpompren seconded by Mr William Mason Lletylwydin, that the hearse house be erected by the side of the existing porch in the Llancynfelin New Burial Ground. (Carried unanimously)

(6) On the proposition of Mr John Davies Builder seconded by Mr John Jones (Jun) Penpompren, that the Vicar and Mr John Jones Royal Oak draw up draft rules for the management and care of the hearse, by the next meeting of the committee. (Carried unanimously)

(7) That the next meeting of the committee be held at the Taliesin Board School Room at 5.30 pm on Thursday December 30th 1897

At a committee meeting held at the Board School Room on Thursday evening December 30th 1897. Present the Vicar, Messrs John Jones Royal Oak, John Davies Builder, James James Tanyrallt, William Edwards and John Jones Penpompren. It was resolved

(1) On the proposition of Mr William Edwards, seconded by Mr John Jones Penpompren, that the tender of Edward Jones Talybont for horse harness for £5 . 10 . 0 with nickel bit, be accepted. (Collars to be 24 and 20 inches respectively)

(2) That the consideration of the tenders for a hearse be postponed for a week

(3) That the next meeting of the committee be held at the Board School Room on Thursday evening January 6th 1898

At an adjourned meeting of the committee held at the Board School Room on Thursday evening January 6th 1898. Present the Vicar (chairman), Messrs John Davies, James James, David Davies Cefngweiriog, William Mason, William Edwards and John Jones Royal Oak. After the minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. It was resolved

(1) On the proposition of Mr Mason, seconded by Mr William Edwards that the tender of Messrs R. Jones and Sons Aberystwyth for a hearse for £35 (less 5 per cent for ready money) be accepted. The hearse to be of full size (after the pattern of the one seen by some members of the committee on Monday January 3rd 1898) and to be built entirely of new and the best materials. The springs to be strong and adapted for country roads. The hearse to be ready in two months from the date of order, the committee claiming the right to inspect the same before painting

(2) That the Vicar, Messrs John Davies, William Edwards and John Jones Royal Oak be deputed to examine the proposed site of the hearse house, to decide as to plans, and to invite tenders for building the same. The tenders to be considered at the next meeting of the committee , which is to be held this day fortnight

(3) That the house be of the same size and roofed with the same kind of slate as the existing porch, and that the floor be of stone flags

At an adjourned meeting of the committee held at the School Room on Thursday evening January 20th 1898. Present the Vicar (chairman), Messrs James Jones, John Davies, W. Mason, W. Edwards, D. Davies, James James, J. Jones (Jun) Penpompren, and J. Jones Royal Oak

It was resolved, on the proposition of Mr J. Davies seconded by Mr J. Jones Penpompren that Messrs Mason and Jones Royal Oak be deputed to see Professor Edwards, about giving a lecture in aid of the funds, to ascertain his terms, to print tickets, &c. That the Vicar secure the use of the School room for the occassion, and Mr Jones Tymawr to ask Mr Pryse to take the chair

The tenders for erecting the hearse house were opened and considered. On the proposition of Mr Jones Royal Oak, seconded by Mr Jones Tymawr the tender of Messrs W. Edwards and Son for £21 was unanimously accepted. The building to be completed according to the plan and specification within 6 weeks from this date

Present the Vicar (in chair), Messrs Mason, Edwards, James, Davies (Builder), Jones Tymawr, Jones (Jun) Penpompren, and Jones Royal Oak. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Messrs Gibson's bill for printing and advertising (12/-) was ordered to be paid. It was resolved that 4 pipes be procured to make a drain in front of the hearse house

3. That 100 copies of the Rules, and 100 forms of undertaking against damage as per Rule 5, be printed

At a meeting of the Hearse Committee duly convened and held at the School Room, Taliesin, on Saturday the 12th November 1898, called to consider how to raise or collect money to pay the balance now due to William Edwards. There were present the Rev'd G. Roderick (Chairman), Messrs David Davies, John Jones Jun'r Penpompren, James James, John Jones Royal Oak, and William Edwards. Decided to adjourn the meeting untill this day month to allow time to collect as much as possible towards clearing the balance

It was unanimously agreed to pay Mr William Edwards the sum of seven pounds and six shillings being £7 . 3 . 6 balance due in April 1898 with 2/6 interest agreed to pay on same, total £7 . 6 . 0, and the Treasurer obtained his receipt for same

It was further agreed on the proposition of Mr William Mason seconded by Mr James James that a sufficient copies of the balance sheet for all subscribers, to have one each, be printed, and that the drawing up of same be entrusted to the Treasurer and Secretary, with authority to have the same printed

Mr John Jones Royal Oak gave notice that at the next meeting he will propose that all owners of property and occupiers residing in the parish of five pounds rental and above, who have refused to subscribe towards the hearse fund be called upon to pay an additional fee to the one now in use (as printed) should they at any time require the use of the hearse. The extra amount of fees to be fixed upon by the committee at a duly convened summoned meeting. Mr John Jones also handed over 1/- the subscription of David James Taliesin to Treasurer in time to have his name placed in the list of subscribers

1906, April 16th. At a summoned meeting of the Llancynfelin Parish Hearse Committee, held at the School Room Taliesin this 16th day of April 1906. Present, John Jones Penpompren, William Mason, William Edwards, John Davies, and John Jones Pencae Villa (secretary). Lewis Edwards and James Ll. James were also in attendance having remained in the room after the Parish Council meeting

It was proposed by Mr William Mason and seconded by Mr John Jones Penpompren that Mr John Jones Tymawr Mochno be elected a member to fill the vacancy caused by the death of his father. Carried unanimously, agreed. On the proposition of Mr John Jones Penpompren, seconded by John Jones Pencae Villa that Mr Lewis Edwards Taliesin be elected to fill the vacancy caused through the death of the late David Davies. Proposed by Mr John Jones Penpompren and seconded by Mr John Davies that Mr James Llewellyn James Tanyrallt be elected to fill the vacancy caused by the death of his father the late James James. Agreed to unanimously

Proposed by Mr John Jones Pencae Villa and seconded by Mr John Davies that the Vicar, the Rev'nd John Phillips be elected Treasurer in the place of the late Vicar, the Rev'nd G. Roderick. Carried unanimously

No other business of importance was transacted. It was decided to call another meeting without long to consider the question of repairs and management of the Hearse, &c.

 

10 August 1912. The following members of the Hearse Committee met in the Council School, Rev. J. Phillips, Mr John Davies, Mr W. Mason. There was also present Mr A. J. Edwards representing the late Mr John Jones

The accounts were thoroughly investigated and showed that the sum of £1 . 11 . 7½ is in the hands of the Treasurer

Mr Mason proposed that the vacancies on the Hearse Committee be filled up. This was seconded by Mr John Davies. The Rev. J. Phillips proposed an amendment that the present committee (Hearse) should give up office and transfer their duties to the Parish Council. This was not seconded. Mr Mason's proposition was carried

The following new members were co-opted, John G. Stevens Erglodd, Thomas J. Thomas Neuadd yr Ynys, Mr Isaac Richards Ynystudor, David Owen Edwards, and Evan Pugh Post Office

Mr Arthur J. Edwards was appointed to act as Secretary in place of the late Mr John Jones

Mr Arthur J. Edwards was requested to convene a committee for next Saturday evening at the hour of 6

Mr John Davies resigned his seat on the committee and on the motion of Rev. J. Phillips, seconded by Mr Mason, Mr Arthur J. Edwards was appointed to fill his place

The committee passed a resolution marking their deep sense of the loss sustained by the committee through the death of the late Mr Jones who had served faithfully on the committee since its formation , and wish to convey the sincere sympathy of the members with the family of the deceased

August 17th 1912. The following members of the Hearse Committee met at the Council School, the Rev. J. Phillips presiding, Mr T. J. Thomas, Mr D. O. Edwards, Mr J. G. Stephens, Mr Evan Pugh, Mr Isaac Richards, and A. J. Edwards Secretary

The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed, and showed the balance of £1 . 11 . 7½ in the hands of the Treasurer

Mr T. J. Thomas proposed that the Treasurer of the Sports Committee be asked to hand over to the Treasurer of the Hearse Committee the £5 . 0 . 0 (five pounds) now in his hands and to thank the Council for same

Mr T. J. Thomas proposed tht a sub-committee be appointed to look into and see what necessary repairs were required on the hearse and also the hearse house. The following were appointed on the sub-committee, Mr T. J. Thomas, Mr J. G. Stephens, and A. J. Edwards. A. J. Edwards gave a rough estimate of the cost to repair the hearse and hearse house, viz

A letter was read from the family of the late Mr John Jones Pencae Villa appreciating the committee's vote of sympathy in their sad bereavement

(i) Mr Arthur J. Edwards reported that the treasurer of the Sports Committee would hand over to the treasurer of the Hearse Committee the sum of £5 after the repairs to the hearse had been completed provided the repairs met with the approval of two members of the Parish Council

(ij) Mr Arthur J. Edwards reported that Mr J. T. Thomas had conveyed the hearse to Messrs Jones & Bros Aberystwyth on Wednesday 21st. The hearse had been previously inspected by the sub-committee. Messrs Jones Bros promised to have all necessary repairs, painting &c., done in the course of a fortnight

(iij) Mr Arthur J. Edwards reported that the Hearse Committee had procured the Talybont Hearse to convey the body of Mrs Sophia Thomas Arosfa to the grave on Saturday 21st. The charge for the Talybont Hearse was stated to be 2/6, of this sum 1/6 comes from the relatives of the deceased and the Hearse Committee is responsible for the other 1/-

(iv) The sub-committee of the Hearse Committee were instructed to have the hearse house cleaned, and the roof of the same repaired before the hearse be replaced in the same

Feb. 13, 13. A committe of the Hearse Committee met at the Council School. There were present Rev. J. Phillips, Messres J. G. Stephens, W. Mason, T. J. Thomas, Isaac Richards, D. O. Edwards, A. J. Edwards

The sub-committee Messrs Stephens, T. J. Thomas, and A. J. Edwards reported that the hearse house was cleared of all dirt and rubbish consisting of mortar, sand and other things. Also that a box was provided to hold the tools of the gravedigger. The action of the sub-committee was commended and the Treasurer was instructed to pay Mr John Davies joiner Taliesin the sum of 16/- for the box

The work ordered by the sub-committee to be done to the roof was recommended and the Treasurer was instructed to pay Mr D. O. Edwards 3/- for the work

Mr A. J. Edwards reported that he had reeived from the treasurer of the Sports Committee the sum £5

Proposed and seconded that the thanks of the committee be tendered to Messrs J. G. Stephens, T. J. Thomas, and A. J. Edwards for the work they did in connection with the hearse and the hearse (sic) in taking it back and fore to Aberystwyth

Mr Mason proposed a vote of thanks to the Parish Council for the £5 received from them. Seconded by Mr Richards, carried unanimously. Mr A. J. Edwards was instructed to convey the vote of thanks to the Parish Council

The details of the work done on the hearse by the coachbuilders was discussed by the committee and the treasurer was authorized to pay the coachbuilder's bill of £5 . 7 . 0. The coachbuilder's kindly granted 7/- discount

Nov. 21, 1913. A committee was held at the Council School. Present, Rev. J. Phillips, Messres T. J. Thomas, J. G. Stephens, D. O. Edwards, Evan Pugh, A. J. Edwards, Mr Isaac Richards. Business,

I. Mr T. J. Thomas reported that Edward Thomas resigned his office as hearse cleaner and caretaker. Mr T. J. Thomas proposed that Richard Davies Taliesin be appointed to succeed Edward Thomas. Seconded by Mr D. O. Edwards. Mr T. J. Thomas wished to impress on the new caretaker the importance of keeping the hearse very clean. Unanimously carried that Richard Davies be appointed

II. Mr T. J. Thomas called attention to the condition of the fastening of the door of the hearse house. Mr D. O. Edwards proposed that the Chairman be authorized to employ a carpenter to see to the door and to remedy the defect. Mr T. J. Thomas seconded. Carried unanimously

III. Mr Evan Pugh proposed that when the hearse be used to go to Glandyfi station or Ynyslas station or Penygarn cemetry or Llanfihangel G. G. churchyard or anywhere within that circle, the cleaner is to receive only 1/6 as a fee for cleaning. Also when the hearse goes outside the above circle the cleaner is to receive an additional fee of 1/-. Mr J. G. Stephens seconded. Carried unanimously

IV. A bill of 2/6 was presented from W. Tho's James saddler Talybont for repairing harness on Nov. 7, 1913. This was ordered to be paid

V. Mr T. J. Thomas proposed that on information delivered by the cleaner to the Chairman of the Committee that any repairs are needed to the harness the Chairman be authorized to have the repairs done forthwith. Seconded by Mr A. J. Edwards. Carried nem. con.

VI. Mr A. J. Edwards tendered his resignation as a member and Secretary of the Hearse Committee. The resignation was regretfully accepted

VII. Mr T. J. Thomas proposed that a meeting of the Hearse Committee be held to appoint a new member and secretary in lieu of Mr Edwards. This meeting was fixed for the 5th December at 6.30 pm. This was seconded and carried unanimously. Mr Edwards kindly consented to carry on the secretarial duties until a successor be appointed

I. Minutes of last committee were read and signed

II. The Chairman reported that Mr John Davies had undertaken to repair the door of the hearse house

III. Mr Richard Davies accepted the office of caretaker and cleaner of the hearse and hearse house on the conditions set forth in minute III of the last meeting

IV. The thanks of the committee were tendered to Mr A. J. Edwards for his faithful service to the committee in the past

V. Mr T. J. Thomas proposed Mr William Pugh be elected as a member. Mr Stephens seconded. Carried Nem. con.

VI. Mr Stephens proposed that Mr William Pugh be appointed Hon. Secretary to the committee. Mr Isaac Richards seconded. Mr Arthur J. Edwards proposed Mr D. O. Edwards as Hon. Sec. Mr John Jones Tymawr seconded. The Chairman ruled that Mr A. J. Edwards' proposel could not be entertained as he had ceased to be a member since the last meeting. Mr W'm Pugh was therefore elected
