SATURDAY. 3rd JUNE. 1922.

Morning Paper: 10 - 12 noon.

ARITHMETIC

Answer as many as you can of the following. Read each question carefully before attempting it and, except in the case of Question No. 1, show all the working on your paper.

1.Work mentally, writing down the answers only.
 (a)Cost of 80 railway tickets at 2s. 6d. each.
 (b)999 x 25.
 (c)Cost of 40 yards of ribbon at 11½d. a yard.
 (d)How many times is .25 contained in 18 ¼.
 (e)Express £3.125 in £ s. d.
 
2.Divide the sum of 5.125 and 2.625 by their difference.
 
3.A hall is lighted by 4 paraffin lamps, which burn one-third pint, one quarter-pint, one-fifth pint and one-sixth pint of paraffin per hour respectively. How much oil is consumed when all are burning for 4 hours each evening for 5 evenings?
 
4. A boy invested £24 for one year in a Savings Bank. At the end of the year, this sum had amounted to £24 12s. What was the rate per cent of interest?
 
5.Which are the cheaper to buy, potatoes at 10s. 6d. a bushel (56lbs.) or at 2½d. a lb? How much is gained by buying 20 lbs. at the cheaper rate?
 
6. Find the number of tiles required to pave a rectangular yard whose dimensions are 20 ft. by 30 ft., if each tile is 8 ins. by 8 ins.
Find the cost of the tiles required at 13s. per 100.
 
7. 7 lbs. of black tea cost 10s. 6d., and 9 lbs. of green tea £1 2s. 6d. When mixed, what should be the average price per lb.?
 
8. The area of a field is 5 acres 2 roods 20 square poles and it is rented at £5 per annum. At this rate, what should be the rent of an allotment of 36 square poles?
 
9. A farmer has sufficient food to last 120 sheep for three weeks. How many sheep must he sell so that the food may last the remainder for five weeks?
 
10. By selling hay at £5 per ton, a farmer entails a loss of 10 per cent. For how much per ton must it be sold to gain 15 per cent?
 
11. There were 7,422 pupils on the Register of our schools last year, but the average attendance was 6,350. Find--
 (a)The percentage (correct to one decimal place) of attendance for the year;
 (b)the amount of grant received from the government at the rate of 36s. per head of the average attendance;
 (c)the amount of grant that would have been received, had all the children attended without missing a single attendance during the year.
12. A bicycle wheel turns round 72 times in going one-tenth of a mile.
 (a)What is the circumference of the wheel?
 (b)What is its diameter?

Answer any Three of the following:

1. Write an account of
Either, The parting of Denys and Gerard;
or The doctor's visit to Gerard.

2. Give an account of the behaviour and experiences of the Roman mother during the storm at sea.

3. Give a brief description of an inn in the time of Gerard.

4. Explain the words and phrases in italics in the following sentences:--

"The very rustics were said to have a custom hereabouts of murdering the unwary traveller in these gloomy woods whose dark and devious wanderings enabled those who were familiar with them to do deeds of rapine and blood undetected, or, if detected, easily to baffle pursuit."

"But the next moment, his countenance fell, and he said plaintively, 'And my axe is in the Rhine.' They consulted together. Prudence bade them avoid that village; hunger said 'Buy food.' Hunger spoke loudest; prudence most convincingly."


B. ANTHOLOGY OF VERSE AND GEMAU CEIRIOG

Answer any Three of the following:

1. Quote between 10 and 15 lines from
Either the Anthology of Verse;
or Gemau Ceiriog.

2. Give an account, in your own words, of Sir Ralph the Rover.

3. Of whom were the following lines written? Describe the services rendered by these persons which led to the writing of the poems.

(a) "She, with all a monarch's pride,
Felt them in her bosom glow,
Rushed to battle, fought and died;
Dying, hurled them at the foe."

(b) "A Lady with a Lamp shall stand
In the great history of the land,
A noble type of good,
Heroic womanhood."

C. GENERAL.

Answer One of the following:

1. Write sentences showing the correct use of each of the following:--

2. Fill in the blanks in the following sentences, using who, which, that, whose, or whom.
